DATES 2012
9-17 June only
What does your money buy?
The cost pp is PP based on two sharing. We stay at 2 and 3 star establishments and often use 'edge of town' hotels to to prevent 'hard to find' stopovers in the heart of some villages/towns.
*Luggage transport
*Support vehicle
*Support rider
*All meals (see below)
*8 nights accommodation
*Transport to airport
MEALS: It makes life easier for me to pay by one cheque the morning after a stopover. So, you can have a meal up to the value of 25 euros. Most places do super 4 course meals for that price. Drinks you have to pay for yourselves. For example, some like more expensive wines than others and it makes sense to for each guy/gal to drink their preferred beverage.
We truly aim to give you a trip to remember. A good giggle too, if you have the energy left to laugh! You need to be fit though as backroads tend to take a 'lumpy' route. See each days total ascent.
The pool at our home where we can relax on the way south. On this day we can set off a little earlier and we could be here at around 3pm. This will leave you time to use it and recover a little whilst the feast is prepped!
The trip starts at St Malo. Chosen because riders can a good nights sleep on the ferry and arrive fresh and ready to roll. The overnight ferry gets in very early. We'll spend a wee while saying hello and prepping any bikes that have just emerged from a bike box. Each rider will have to bring a bike box/bag if they are flying home from Perpignan. If you are coming to St Malo the day before, then please let us know and we can meet up the night before and say hello. We can even let you know where we are staying in advance as you may like to be in the same hotel. For those of you arriving on the ferry for day 1, we'll chat at the port and during the early stages of the ride.
Day 1: St Malo to Chateau Gontier
152k and 1253m of ascent
Very up and down really. From sea level to a highest point of 190m. Pro's don't like this sort of day in races as it messes with rythem
Day 2: Chanteau Gontier to Loches
147k and 1130m of ascent
The terrain is much like yesterday but I feel that the hills get a bit sharper and shorter. Great 'away from it all' route
Day 3: Loches to Puy Robin (our home)
151k and 1629m of ascent
Well it starts out a nice easy ride until after the town of Argenton-Sur-Creuse. Then it begins to climb onto the plateau of the Massif Central. The highest point comes at 139k's and is 412m. I reckon we could push a little harder today and get to my place for around 3pm.
Day 4:Puy Robin to Perigeux
166km and 1887m of ascent
The highest point today falls at 94k and is 456m above se alevel. From that point on we drop to around 100m with one or two small lumps to cater for. So far, this is the most we have climbed in a day and over the longest distance too! So, the first 2/3rds of the day is a test without doubt.
Day 5: Perigeux to Agen
157km and 1293 of ascent
This day is an average sort of day when it comes to effort. We will be cycling thru the land of the famous grapes of Bergerac. Some nice riverside runs today and plenty off traffic free lanes too.
Day 6: Agen to Labarthe-Inard
144km and 1901m of ascent
I reckon we'll find this day easy up to the 110km point. Then it rises up to what I guess we will call the foothills of the Pyrenees. Tomorrow is a monster! As with all the other days.....today the route is fantastic!!
Day 7:Labarthe-Inard to Tarascon sur Ariege
142km and 4330m of ascent
I think you may remember this day for the rest of your lives if you have never done a tough mountain day before! Days like this don't come around often. And it will be tough! Make no mistake. First climb starts at 15k and goes for on 7k. The 2nd is 9k long and comes at the 34k mark. The beast commences at 61k and drags on for 17k. I know all these well and the last one is long, at around 26k, but not steep. Make sure you go at your own pace from the start of the day
Day 8: Tarascon sur Ariege to Canet Beach
162km and 2318m of ascent
I gotta tell you this is a great route today. It will still be tough as there is 7,000 feet to climb but the remote-ness of some of the roads is to behold. And the gorge will be a great asset to the final day! The sum total of this week will around 1300km's of road and around 16,444 meters of up! In feet that is 53,443. Or 641,316 inches! Way to go eh?
We have more trips planned.
Every day we'll send the SV off to get lashings of food for our picnic style munch stop. Fresh French bread, Cheeses, cold meats, fruit, salad and juices. We'll have fold away chairs and brollys for shade. We plan the stops at a river or other lovely spot.
